Functional Medicine in Bury St Edmunds

Patient-centred, functional medicine aims to address the root cause of conditions by understanding an individual’s genetic, biochemical and lifestyle factors.

What is functional medicine?

The Functional Medicine model is an individualised, patient-centred, science-based approach that empowers patients to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that data to direct personalised treatment plans that lead to improved patient outcomes.

By addressing the root cause, rather than symptoms, practitioners become oriented to identifying the complexity of disease. They may find one condition has many different causes and, likewise, one cause may result in many different conditions. As a result, functional medicine treatment targets the specific manifestations of disease in each individual.

What to expect at your functional medicine appointment?

Our functional medicine appointments are carried out by Dr Chandraraj.

Prior to your initial consultation you will be emailed a ‘Functional Medicine Analysis Questionnaire’. Covering every aspect of health and wellbeing, these forms provide the basis of your evaluation, and should be returned a week in advance of the consultation.

It would also be helpful if you can bring a summary of your GP notes, a list of prescriptions and a copy of any recent investigation results.
During the consultation itself, Dr Chandraraj will review your history and discuss the possible root causes of your symptoms and how these might be further investigated and treated. This initial consultation lasts for approximately 80 minutes.

At the end of the consultation, you will receive a full report, detailing your history, possible root causes for your problems and a ‘Functional Medicine Prescription’ detailing the initial treatment protocol. This may include changes to lifestyle, diet, supplementation and/or medication.
In some cases further investigations would be advised. This can be arranged with a review appointment scheduled to discuss the results and to amend the treatment plan accordingly.

Patients found to have symptoms of acute illness, or symptoms necessitating urgent cancer investigations, will be directed back to their own GP.

Telephone Consultation

If you have a simple query or are not sure if functional medicine is right for you, or if you do not want to commit to a full Functional Medicine Plan with Dr Chandraraj, then you can book an initial 15-minute telephone consultation. Please note however this is not enough time to take a functional medicine history and no report will be created.
