Diagnostic ultrasound is utilised by adding a probe on the skin’s surface to deliver sound waves into the body’s tissues. This produces pictures of the inside of the body and significantly increases diagnostic accuracy and allows for better treatment decisions and goal setting.
At The Abbeyfields Clinic we use it to accurately guide treatments to the tissues that require it. e.g. for medical acupuncture, shockwave therapy and rehabilitation.
Ultrasound imaging technology uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of superficial and deep tissues such as muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves and bones. It works by emitting sound waves into the body, which are then bounced back off internal structures and detected by a transducer.
The transducer converts the sound waves into electrical signals, which are then processed and displayed on a screen as a real-time image. The image is created by the computer analysing the time it takes for the sound waves to bounce back and the frequency of the sound waves, allowing for a detailed picture of the internal organs and tissues.
Ultrasound technology has no harmful side effects and unlike Xrays or CT scans doesn’t use radiation. Technological developments mean that in many cases Ultrasound imaging can be as accurate as MRI imaging for detecting tears and injuries in many joints.
NB: We cannot use Ultrasound imaging for spinal disorders. We do not currently offer imaging for gynaecology/pregnancy or abdominal disorders.
Our diagnostic ultrasound machines uses a unique transmitting algorithm which can transmit two waveforms depending on the focusing depth.
This helps to increase the quality of signal around the centre of the ultrasound beam in the receiving area. As a result, it suppresses the acoustic noise to ensure the optimum imaging from deep to superficial areas.
