Women’s Health – Pelvic Floor Dysfunction (PFD) treatment Suffolk

PFD is the inability or difficulty to control the muscles of the pelvic floor. This can lead to issues with urination, bowel movements, and sexual intercourse.

Get in touch

Pelvic floor issues can be painful, bothersome, and embarrassing. One in three women will suffer some form of pelvic health related issues in their lifetime. Common symptoms include accidental leakage (incontinence of the bowel or bladder) an over-active bladder, pelvic organ prolapse (where the pelvic organs descend into the vagina, and pelvic pain.

The goal of treatment is to allow for reconditioning and re-training of the pelvic floor muscles, through a combination of methods. The therapist may stretch and relax the muscles if there is tension or may apply resistance to strengthen if the muscles are weak.  Home-based exercises can also be given, both to strengthen and relax the pelvic floor muscles.

There are many causes of pelvic floor dysfunction, including childbirth, pelvic floor trauma, pelvic surgery, and chronic constipation.  Other issues such as hypermobility may contribute to an overactive and painful pelvic floor. Urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse may also be secondary to pelvic floor issues.

A “pelvic floor appointment” begins by taking a comprehensive history. A thorough examination of the pelvis and surrounding structures takes place, your posture is evaluated and other factors such as breathing mechanics are all taken into consideration. NB: The assessment usually (and with your consent) involves evaluation of external and internal muscles. After the examination, a treatment/rehab plan can be developed, which may involve hands-on therapy, strengthening exercises, relaxation exercises, education, and co-ordination exercises.

Whatever your age, accepting conditions like these doesn’t have to be your new way of life. Our specialist pelvic health therapist Elly is passionate about improving women’s quality of life and giving them back a sense of control.

Elly can help with a great number of pelvic related problems including:

  • Incontinence
  • Overactive bladder or bowel
  • Going to the toilet too often
  • Pelvic floor muscle weakness
  • Pelvic pain and vulvodynia
  • Pelvic organ prolapse

I’ve been seeing Joe for a while to help manage my tension migraines. He keeps the symptoms under control and has offered practical advice that’s helped reduce how often they occur. Joe's guidance has made me aware of the triggers and how I can make positive changes to my lifestyle to reduce/manage my migraines.Several members of my family have also been successfully treated by Joe for a range of issues, and he’s always our first port of call whenever an injury crops up. His approach is friendly, down‑to‑earth, and genuinely knowledgeable — exactly what you want in an osteopath. If you’re looking for a skilled professional who listens, understands, and delivers real results, Joe is the Osteo to see.

Wanted to give a huge shout out to Joe for the amazing job he did relieving my chronic lower back pain. I've had pain for about 6 years now and have tried everything to cure it and nothing worked or gave me relief. Joe was the only person who was able to diagnose the issue I was having and found a way to remedy the pain I was enduring and actually made my quality of life amazing again! I saw him for 2 years and in those two years, I got my life back being able to walk, bend, lift, stand, you name it. He also became a great acquaintance as he has great conversations (especially about fishing) but also listened and talked me through some hard times. He even helped me out with pain during my entire pregnancy as well! I was sad to move from the area and wish I could find another osteopath like Joe who's very knowledgeable in the field but also has great communication skills and FIXES issues rather than putting "band-aids" on. Highly recommend!!

Cannot recommend Elly (osteopath) enough. We often joke it will be a painful visit but honestly, I have been in crisis and left after treatment in a much better place. Cannot recommend enough, thank you !

I underwent a course of shockwave therapy, with James, for Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome, in my left hip area. The treatment has relieved most of the pain that was affecting the knee, hip and groin areas. I would highly recommend this treatment for those with a similar problem.
